Forward by Coach Pete
Every year around mid summer, we complete a workout named after our gym. This year was an attendance record and so I asked Reza to give a brief synopsis of the event. This is what he had to say...
I woke up on our Nations 150th anniversary and felt immediate disappointment. It was pouring rain outside and I knew no one would want to come to the 5th NCR WOD. As I was coaching the 9am Basics class, I kept looking over my shoulder to see if the rain was letting up and if people were starting to roll in. It was 9:45am when I had officially given up hope...
Before I carry on, I'll quickly discuss what the NCR is and why it's so special to our community! "The NCR" was created when myself and Ben Taylor were bored and decided to see how long it would take us to run to Mooney's Bay. Once we got there, we found some cool pull-up bars and decided to do a WOD. On the way back we thought it would be cool if we programmed the same WOD for a class so thats exactly what we did. It's funny because, as CrossFit athletes, one of our common goals is to see how hard we can suffer with our peers. As a result, when we announced this crazy WOD, a good chunk of people showed up. People got lost, people ran their first 5k, people met new people, and most of all people had fun. We decided this was something that we would do every year! It only got bigger and better!
The basics class wrapped up and I noticed there were quite a few people in the lobby! I quickly pulled the coaches aside and reviewed what the WOD would be. Run to Mooney's Bay, 5 hill climbs, 150 Burpees, 5 hill climbs, then run back to NCR. As soon as I was done I walked back over to the lobby and couldn't believe my eyes! The lobby was full of athletes ready to take this thing on. It was truly a proud moment for me. There was a torrential downpour outside and it was Canada Day and all these people came to the gym to suffer through one of the most brutal WODs of the year!
Athletes absolutely smashed the workout and the last few athletes came in faster than Usain Bolt. You could practically hear the crowd waiting for them from Falcon Ave! Everyone finished and hung out, ate food, drank beer and had an awesome time. We made some calculations and this was the biggest "NCR" ever! After hearing this, I was slightly disappointed in myself for ever doubting the BEST COMMUNITY IN THE WORLD!
In conclusion, if you came out on July 1st, 2017, THANK YOU! If you've never done "The NCR", DO IT!
